  RAPAPORT... The Consensus Retailer Health Ratings is a new benchmarking tool that provides "essential context to retailer comp store sales data." Consensus Advisors contended that there is an over-reliance upon comparable store sales growth statistics. "Comps" or same-store sales are short-term focused and potentially misleading when viewed out of context, so the group created this new measure to factor in margin, inventory level, advertising spend and consumer credit practices as a measure of a retailer's health. "Comps also say nothing about a retailer's financial leverage, brand strength or ability to manage efficiently the assets on its balance sheet," the group concluded. View a high-level summary of the Retailer Health Ratings report: www.retailerhealth.com The Consensus Retailer Health Ratings measure and compare retailers during a five-year period with regard to healthy growth, asset utilization, pricing power, and balance sheet strength. Retailers were assigned scores and placed in one of five tiers. For the Luxury grouping, Consensus picked Coach as the clear winner against Zale, Tiffany & Co., Kay Jewelers, ShopNBC, Bluefly, Birks & Mayors, Blue Nile and Claire's. Overall, against 158 US retailers, Coach came in seventh place. Amazon.com ranked No.1, followed by Aeropostale, Urban Outfitters, CVS, Walmart and Bed Bath & Beyond.   News Update: Jones Soda Co. Inks Be...
  05/27/2010 - Jones Soda Co. (NASDAQ:JSDA) announced a deal with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT) Thursday morning, which authorizes the soda company to sell its products in 3800 US-based Wal-Mart stores starting at the end of May. The deal gives a near 10% boost to Jones' total retail outlet distribution. "The primary complaint through our customer service feedback is that people can't find Jones Soda near them," said Jones CEO William Meissner. "The Wal-Mart deal allows for another one of America's premier retailers to offer Jones. Wal-Mart greatly expands our distribution footprint and truly makes our product accessible to everyone, which is something the Jones Soda brand has always stood for. Now, almost anyone, anywhere in the US can seek out a nearby store or stumble upon our product and purchase it on the spot. We are incredibly energized by the growth potential this Wal-Mart expansion brings." The deal gives Jones three shelf facings for 6-packs of Jones Pure Cane Soda; Wal-Mart tested sales of the product in 750 of its stores earlier, and presented Jones with official authorization on May 3rd of this year. Shares of Jones Soda closed out Wednesday's trading day at $0.68 per share, and Wal-Mart closed yesterday at $50.02 per share.
