Perhaps spurred on by the Moxi HD DVR, TiVo has finally given its interface a high-def makeover, and the new look makes its debut in a pair of new HD DVRs: the TiVo Premiere ($300) and the TiVo Premiere XL ($500). These new models will replace the TiVo HD DVR and TiVo HD XL DVR. We have not performed a hands-on review of the TiVo Premiere, but here is an overview of its features. This two-tuner HD DVR has a 320GB hard drive (twice the size of the basic TiVo HD DVR), for up to 45 hours of HD recording, and it supports both digital cable and over-the-antenna HDTV reception. It has built-in ATSC tuners for over-the-air content, …

Over three years after the original Series3 launched , TiVo’s back with Series4 — say hello to the new TiVo Premiere and Premiere XL, which will arrive in early April. The new slimmer hardware is nice, but the big news is the totally revamped HD interface built on Flash — yes, Flash — with all kinds of new options for discovering...
We’ve gotten our first look at the new TiVo Premiere interface, and it sure is shiny. You sure wouldn’t see that it’s running in Flash at first blush, since the UI is quite responsive and “native” feeling, with live streams of video playing without a hitch. The biggest hint that there’s a big amount of reliance...
Don’t expect TiVo’s international ambitions to stop with Virgin Media , as it’s announced a deal with Technicolor (formerly Thomson ) to develop “an advanced, TiVo-ready, high definition PVR set-top box” (sounds like Premiere to us, but one can never be sure.) Technicolor is putting TiVo’s software on its DSI803...
TiVo loyalists have waited a long, long time for this. The Premiere is marketed as the DVR to end all DVRs, and unlike those plain-jane boxes served up at your local pay-TV provider, there’s actually a decent amount of ingenuity within TiVo’s freshest set-top box. Unfortunately, those good intentions didn’t really lead to a beautiful...
Say hello to another firmware update for the TiVo Premiere , now up to version 14.4. TiVo reps tell ZatzNotFunny that it’s still only running on one processor core, but reports indicate speed has been noticeably improved on the new HD menu system. Considering that’s likely one of the main reasons for people to purchase the new boxes...
If the minature box doesn’t give it away then the word “Premiere” certainly does. That’s the first in the wild shot of TiVo’s inaugural Series 4 shifter riding the shelves of Best Buy. We’re told that the units are definitely in-house but are being withheld from shelves until March 28th (not the 27th as originally...
One of our bigger gripes with the TiVo Premiere was the lack of an included QWERTY remote and how cumbersome it was to use search with the directional pad. Fortunately, while we wait for the official peripheral, it seems our old friend Dave Zatz has been snooping around the internet searching for alternatives — and best of all, he’s...
What started as Jim Barton and Mike Ramsay’s idea in 1997 became a reality in 1999 when TiVo burst on the scene and changed the way people watch TV. While time-shifting programs had been around for years via VCR, you couldn’t pause live TV, watch one program while recording another, or view a comprehensive program guide at the push of...
TiVo users, even with boxes provided by their cable company in the case of RCN and Comcast , have so far had to make a compromise: Choose their cable company’s video on-demand offerings, or bring their own DVR and access online video from sources like Amazon and Netflix — but that’s no longer the case. Cox and TiVo have reached...
Look out, TiVo: There’s a not-so-new DVR platform vying for consumers’ attention. The Moxi interface has quietly been earning a name for itself, first by appearing in cable set-top boxes and now in its own standalone HD DVR. The Moxi HD DVR–formerly developed by Digeo, which is now owned by ARRIS–has been available in a...
